Reykjavik, Iceland - Countryside and Icelandic Horses

Rocky lava covered land slopes dramatically to the lake.

Farms can be found here and there with large grassy pastures.

Icelandic horses - the Icelandic horses were bred in Iceland and are hardy and long-lived.  They have very few diseases in their native country.  Icelandic law prevents horses from being imported in to Iceland and exported animals are not allowed to return.  The Icelandic displays two gaits in addition to the typical walk, trot, and canter/gallop.  The first additional gait is a four-beat lateral ambling gait known as the tölt.  The breed also performs a pace called a skeið, flugskeið or "flying pace". CLICK HERE for more information and action photos of the horses.
