Cairo to Alexandria, Egypt - Highway Fun

Image
5/16/2012 By this time we had spent two days in Egypt and were becoming accustomed to the sights and activity.  The return trip to Alexandria did not disappoint.

Cairo - Cairo Alex Desert Road Scenes

5/15/2012 We are on the last third of the three hour drive from Alexandria to Cairo. This is another roadside cafe.  Three people were sitting inside the cafe to keep out of the sun.

5/15/2012 The three hour drive from Alexandria to Cairo continues through suburbs, farmland, and new road construction.

Giza, Egypt - Mycerinus Pyramid

Image
5/16/2012 There was plenty of action at the Mycerinus Pyramid.  It is one of the three pyramids that remain in the area of the Sphinx in Giza.

Giza - Sphinx and Chefren Pyramid

5/16/2012 Chefren Pyramid with the Sphinx in front of it.  A few steps to the right...click a photo...a few steps further...click a photo. It was an amazing feeling to be staring at this sight.

Giza, Egypt - The Three Pyramids and the Sphinx

5/16/2012 The three pyramids at Giza.  Quite a view as you come upon them.

5/16/2012 It was always a thrill to see a pyramid peaking over the hill.

Cairo, Egypt - Oriental Carpet School

Image
5/16/2012 The workers were incredibly fast and talented as we watched them hand make carpets.  The school provides a way for students to gain an education, learn a skill, and perhaps earn money.

Saqqara, Egypt - Step Pyramid of Djoser

Image
5/16/2012 Our first pyramid visit was the " Step Pyramid of Djoser ".    It was exciting to be in the Saqqara area .  This was a vast ancient burial ground which served as the necropolis (large cemetery or burial grounds) for the Ancient Egyptian capital of Memphis.

Cairo, Egypt - Large city problems

Image
5/15&16/2012 Cairo has the common big city problems: traffic, pollution and trash.  The traffic was pure chaos with pedestrians sharing the street with donkey carts, three wheeled taxis, small cars, small trucks, large trucks and buses.  I don’t know if there were lines on the roads or traffic lights, but apparently it didn’t matter.  Watch the video. Can you tell which lane we are in?

Cairo - Breakfast on the Nile

Image
5/16/2012 Yes, Breakfast on the Nile.  It doesn't look real but this is an actual photograph with the Nile Riverfront...and the tip of our river barge.

Giza, Egypt - Mena House Oberoi

Image
5/15/2012 The Mena House was an extraordinary resort in Giza, with a view of the pyramids.  The property was a hunting lodge originally, and a bit fancier than my grandfather's Pennsylvania hunting lodge.  More on the Mena House...click here.  We had a dinner and lunch here, and stayed here for the night.  The staff was very friendly and accommodating, the wide variety of food was very good, and the property was impeccable.

Cairo, Egypt - Enter the City and Cross The Nile

Image
5/15/2012 We passed the Pyramids and turned east through Giza and into Cairo.  This was our first view of the city streets and buildings.

Egypt - What I didn't see along the Cairo-Alex-Desert-Road

Image
5/15/2012 I think that it is important to note that there seems to be development and growth happening in the Cairo area.  Our trip didn't take us through the housing developments, so I won't be able to present the side of the story that talks about this segment of the population.  I wanted to post some of the photos that I've found of the areas outside of the city, as my inner city photos present a much different picture.
