Wittenberg - Market Square

Image
The Market Square is a large public space surrounded by the ancient town hall, statue of Martin Luther and Stadtkirche.  We were able to shop and take a little break in this area. The shoppers took off for the stores, and another small group found a place to sample local products. Click here for Wikipedia information on the town Aunt Emma's looked like a good place for a snack. I took this picture for Emma.

Wittenberg - Random sights

These were some interesting random sights seen while walking through Wittenberg. Most are self explanatory.  Post a question if you can't determine a photo.

Wittenberg - Schlosskirche (Castle Church)

Image
Martin Luther is buried in the Schlosskirche.   Walls show natural granite condition and stained glass windows remain. This has been called the most famous building in Wittenberg because this is where Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the doors. Martin Luther is buried here. We can see the church in the distance. Handy reading: Click here for wikipedia on Schlosskirche Click here for wikipedia on The Ninety-Five Theses Very interesting architecture You can see the details on the spire. (1858) Commemorative bronze doors were mounted where the original wooden ones had been located. The 95 Thesis is on the doors in Latin. This wooden door may be an example of the look of the older original door. Inside of the church after the renovation and restoration (1883 - 1892) New stained glass windows were installed in 1983. The organ Large stone tile flooring The baptismal font

Wittenberg – St. Marien Church

Image
This church goes by many names:  City Church; Stadtkirche; Marienskirche; St. Mary's Church; Stadtkirche St Marien; City Church of St. Mary; "Mother Church of the Reformation".  It was first a Catholic church and is now a  Lutheran  Church.  It is free to visit.  I didn't take notes, but found this good description of the church. Wittenberg - Street Scenes and Shopping

Image
Spring was very evident here also and the flowering trees and planted flower boxes were beautiful.  Most of the town buildings have been renovated and painted.  If I was able to find a building in the pre-Reconciliation condition, I’ve added it. They were not easy to find. I haven't labeled any of the photos as I don't have any details but found the scenes interesting and thought that you would want to see them too.  And then I saw SCARVES!!

Wittenburg - Martin Luther

Image
Martin Luther is the highlight of the tours today.  His life and works, and the results.  We divided in to 3 groups of about 20, which is a really nice size for moving through the buildings and hearing the tour guides.  Astrid was our tour guide for the day.  The first stop was the Luther House (we had to get used to the local pronounciation – Luter). Parts of the original house are preserved and the guides presented the information in stories of daily life.  The walking was easy and the cobblestones presented a generally flat surface.  Steps were in small sets of 10-15.  The photos show details of the original building and tell a better story.  One of the display cases had an original Wittenburg Bible.  Look at the size of that book!  I was very happy to hear that Martin Luther’s wife Katharina (Kathe – Katie for short) was a strong and entrepreneurial woman. Our cheerful tourguide Astrid. German and punctual, she kept us in lin...
