The overnight train from Paris to Berlin is an easy and comfortable way to travel. The train departs from Gare D'Est in Paris about 8PM. The tickets were purchased via the internet and mailed so be sure to purchase early. I think that there is a fee for ordering via the internet, because the price on the ticket was less than the credit card charge. I would check the price for purchasing it at the station if you are going to be in Paris a week or so before your departure.
The tickets lists the train car number and the seat number. The "seats" are in private compartments and were folded down and made in to beds since we were departing late. The person who works the car came around and we were able to order a sandwich and some wine. (Two sandwiches and two little bottles of red wine were 23 euro...I would buy a sandwich at the train station and bring it on board with you). The sandwich was sliced salami and cheese.
The tickets were for first class, so the compartment had a bathroom complete with toilette, sink and shower. The sink was on a swing bar and was either in the shower area or over the toilet. I had planned to take a shower but once I got in there realized that this was going to be a tight squeeze and not worth the effort. I brushed my hair and teeth and retired to the little bed. Exhausted (due to the laundry that I toiled over earlier), I fell asleep to the gentle rocking of the train. Is there a song in here somewhere? I was impressed that the ride was so smooth and quiet. I woke briefly when the train stopped to decouple cars and send them in another direction but quickly fell back to sleep. After a solid eight hours, I awoke refreshed and ready for the day. Breakfast was served in the next compartment. I am always amazed at the German packaging. It is very neat and efficient. Little liverwurst, butter, nutella, yogurt, and cherry jelly packages. I ate liverwurst for breakfast just so that I could say that I did it ONCE.
Toto, we're not in France anymore.
I hope you ate the Nutella - my very FAVORITE thing in the world. I don't buy it anymore because I just sit and eat it out of the jar!
