Dresden – Frauenkirche (Church of our Mother) and plaza

This church was about 90 percent destroyed in the Dresden bombing at the end of WW II.  The links below will give you an idea of what the building looked like following the bombing.  The sandstone blocks that could be saved were incorporated with the new blocks during the renovation and show as dark spots in the photos.  Do not mistake the darkened blocks for a pollution problem. The granite naturally darkens with age (see this in the natural rock formations on the Elbe River Views blogpost...link to be added at a later date.)

The inside is beautiful

The plaza is in very stages of construction.
This one has been completed and most
of the buildings restored to the original
condition. This little "modern glass"
section has been added.  It adds an interesting
look.

Some sections of the buildings are leveled and new construction
is taking place. Others are covered with scaffolding and are
in a later stage. This will be nice when it is all finished.
Notice that the walking area is all cobblestone.  It is fairly level.

The darkened bricks are from the original building.

The cobblestone paved meeting area is very nicely done
and will be usable for festivals and events.
