Mykonos - Aegean Sea

5/17/2012 We left Alexandria, Egypt and headed towards Mykonos, Greece, crossing the Mediterranean Sea and entering the Aegean Sea.  The clouds were filled with dramatic clouds, threatening to rain.

This map will give you an idea on the crossing. We were at sea for a day, and arrived in port in Mykonos in the morning, ready for a day's adventures.
5/18/2012 We sailed past the city center to the dock for the ship, cameras clicking as we go.

We gathered in the tour groups, checked out of the ship and walked to the Ferry dock for our thirty minute ride to Delos.  The photos here will show you the scenery as we crossed from one island to another.
Multiple tour groups were going to Delos and our ferry boat was full.  Braving the threat of rain, we headed to the upper seating area so that we could photograph the water and islands without trying to work with a glass window.
We rode past some of the housing communities on the main island.  There was construction, which is always a good sign. Most buildings were whitewashed.  Wood framing windows and doors were painted various colors.
Looking back on Mykonos, it looks like the rain is starting.  I hope that my mother took her umbrella when she went to visit the town.  The flag of Greece flew from the back of the ferry.  The flag is referred to as "Sky Blue-white" or simply "Blue-White".  There are nine equal horizontal stripes and a blue canton in the upper hoist-side corner bearing a white cross. The cross symbolizes Eastern Orthodox Christianity, the established religion of the Greek people of Greece and Cyprus.   The stories vary on the symbology of the stripes: Nine syllables of the Phrase (in Greek) Freedom or Death; the number of letters in the Greek spelling of Freedom Ελευθερία.  More info about the flag, click here.
The water was a little choppy, but the water and the dramatic clouds make for a fantastic view.
As we approached the island of Delos, you could see the ancient land rock formations.  It looks mystical to me.
This is a peak at some of the ruins that we were able to see on Delos.  The boat docked and our group exited and gathered with our tour guide for a magical few hour tour of a once prosperous city.

So amazing to me that these cultures are so different and yet not all that far apart. I still imagine them just sailing a few hundred yards from short around the Mediterranean Sea and seeing so many things. Was that such a dangerous trip?
