This pathway looks very authentic...I can imagine that this is the way that things looked throughout the years.
The red and the yellow are so pretty together.
This column is in the area noted as "House of the Lake". This was one of the most elegant residences on Delos. Three entrances lead to the atrium surrounded by an elegant colonnade in the Ionic order.
I looked down and saw busy ants.
This area is to the east side of the Sacred Lake. I think that this is the "Roman Wall".
A fine example of the sewer system, covered.
This is a open well, still in very good shape, or restored (and they did a great job!)
I'm not sure, but the location of this building within the other photos makes me think that this is the Sanctuary of Promachonas.
The Sanctuary of Dionysus.
We were ending the tour and heading to the Museum and Cafe. I turned and took one last look at the pathway.
This looks out across another area
I looked up to the top Mount Kinthos and the Temple of Zeus and Athena at the top. Nope, I can't see the temple either.
You can see the staircase to get to the top of the Mount Kinthos. The white columns at the base of the mountain is the Sanctuary of the Egyptian Gods and Temple of Isis. I didn't try climb the mountain. We were on our own and headed towards the Museum. The map shows the location of these photos.
Brief Background: According to Greek mythology, Apollo was born on this tiny island in the Cyclades archipelago. Apollo's sanctuary attracted pilgrims from all over Greece and Delos was a prosperous trading port. The island bears traces of the succeeding civilizations in the Aegean world, from the 3rd millennium B.C. to the palaeochristian era. The archaeological site is exceptionally extensive and rich and conveys the image of a great cosmopolitan Mediterranean port. See more information on the UNESCO website.
