Trash Talk in Paris: A Front Desk Conversation Turns Into a Business Idea
One of the things I enjoy most about traveling is talking with people who actually live where I am visiting. You can research municipal systems and read official explanations, but sometimes you learn far more by simply asking a local, “So, how does this really work?”
Today, that question was about trash.I had been curious about how Paris handles the enormous amount of household and business waste generated every day. So I struck up a conversation with the gentleman at the front desk of my hotel.
He explained it from the perspective of someone who lives here.
From the Apartment to the Street
In a typical Paris apartment building, residents don’t necessarily wait for “trash day” the way many Americans do. Buildings have designated areas with large bins, often tucked behind doors or inside a courtyard or service area.
When you have trash in your apartment, you take it downstairs and put it into the appropriate building bin. From the resident’s perspective, the job is essentially finished.
Then someone has to move those larger bins out for municipal collection.
It sounds wonderfully straightforward until you get to the important question:
What actually goes into those bins?
That’s when our conversation became much more interesting.
Recycling Only Works If People Actually Recycle
We talked about the responsibility of individual residents to separate recyclable materials from ordinary household waste.
His observation was very practical: you can tell people to separate their trash, but you cannot stand inside everyone’s kitchen and make sure they do it.
That certainly isn’t a uniquely French problem.
I told him about a friend in the United States who doesn’t trust the recycling system at his apartment complex because people throw all sorts of inappropriate things into the recycling containers. Instead, he collects his own recyclable bottles and takes them to a recycling center himself.
That requires effort. You have to store the material, collect enough to make the trip worthwhile, drive to the facility, and perhaps receive a small amount of money in return.
The system depends heavily upon human behavior.
And human behavior is not always particularly cooperative.
Then We Invented a Trash Machine
At some point I asked the obvious question:
Why are we depending entirely upon people to sort everything correctly?
Why couldn’t technology do more of it?
And suddenly our casual conversation at the front desk became a miniature engineering session.
Imagine putting mixed waste into a machine capable of identifying what it sees.
Plastic.
Glass.
Metal.
Paper and cardboard.
Organic material.
Residual waste.
We already have extraordinarily sophisticated imaging, sensors, robotics and artificial intelligence. Airports can scan luggage and identify objects hidden inside a suitcase. Manufacturing facilities use machine vision to identify products traveling rapidly along conveyor belts.
Why not apply increasingly sophisticated versions of that technology to garbage?
We started imagining an automated sorting system that could recognize materials and direct them into separate recycling streams.
Then we got ambitious.
“Put one in every building!”
Maybe not tomorrow. But the underlying idea is fascinating. Instead of relying exclusively upon thousands or millions of individual decisions, technology could help catch the materials people fail to separate correctly.
Could better automated sorting dramatically increase the amount recovered for recycling?
That is certainly a goal worth pursuing.
But Technology Doesn’t Eliminate Responsibility
My Parisian brainstorming partner wasn’t about to let people completely off the hook.
Perhaps, he suggested, the first solution is simply better education.
Separating glass, paper, plastic and household waste isn’t particularly difficult when the rules are clear and the infrastructure is convenient.
Then we imagined smart bins.
Put the wrong material into the wrong container and:
Whoop! Whoop! Whoop!
An alarm sounds.
That made both of us laugh.
Then came the next level: perhaps the system could identify repeated contamination and eventually impose a fee.
Now we had artificial intelligence, automated sorting, smart bins, sensors, education, incentives and penalties.
Not bad for a conversation at a hotel front desk.
Responsibility AND Authority
Near the end of our conversation, I jokingly told him that perhaps his generation was going to have to solve the problem.
He wasn’t accepting responsibility quite that easily.
If his generation was going to get the responsibility, he wanted something else, too:
Authority.
“Authority and responsibility,” we agreed.
And that may have been the best observation of the entire conversation.
Environmental problems are easy to discuss in broad terms. Solving them requires infrastructure, technology, money, regulation and public participation. Most importantly, solutions have to work when ordinary people are tired, busy, distracted or simply don’t feel like following the rules.
Maybe the future isn’t expecting every person to become a perfect recycler.
Maybe it is designing a system smart enough to compensate when we aren’t.
I walked away from the front desk smiling. I had started with a simple question about where Parisians put their garbage.
Twenty minutes later, we were apparently launching an AI recycling company.
Now we just need some investors.
