Périgueux, France - Saint Front Cathedral Exterior

The Saint Front Cathedral was built after 1120 and restored in the 19th century.  The cathedral is named after Saint Front, the first bishop of Périgueux.  The cathedral is part of the World Heritage Sites of the Routes of Santiago de Compostela in France since 1998.  The cathedral was built on the model of St. Mark's Basilica in Venice. The layout is in the form of a Greek cross.  At one time the domes were all different heights, but have been redesigned and are now all the same height.

Périgueux, France - Place de la Clautre Market

Place de la Clautre is a former site of executions, but today (on Wednesdays and Saturdays) it is known for the large market.  There was a wide variety of food and we were there early enough (or late enough?)  to have missed From the market, you can see the Cathedral Saint-Front.

Périgueux, France - Street Shops

Périgueux, Dordogne, Nouvelle-Aquataine in southwestern France

We parked the cars and journeyed through a shopping district.

Perigueux, Dordogne - Le Café de la Place

Lunch in a pretty side street cafe. Found this treat in the bread basket. Then had celery and lentil soup followed by a fresh and fruity salad.

Lisle, Dordogne - Dessert Sample

This is a nice sample of the desserts that were available at the restaurant tonight. Mine was the crème brûlée and it was rich and creamy with the crusty topping. The dark one is chocolate with oozing chocolate in the middle somewhat like the "volcano" desserts that we have in the US. The pink one is a macaron that had raspberry filling.

Villars, France - Cafe Allongé at Grotte de Villars

I opted out of cave exploration and enjoyed a coffee waiting for the rest of the group to resurface.

The Grotte de Villars is a cave with 13km of explored ground and prehistoric paintings, discovered in 1958.  More information can be found at http://grotte-villars.com/gb/

Villars, Dordogne - Abbaye de Boschaud

Beautiful ruins of the abbey. Religion wars ended its existence.
